What Is Microneedling
and Is It Right for You?

Microneedling is talked about everywhere — but what does it actually involve, what can it realistically help with, and what can’t it do? A clear, no-jargon guide.

Microneedling has become one of the most talked-about clinical skin treatments in the UK — and one of the most misunderstood. Here’s a clear, no-jargon explanation of what it actually involves and what to realistically expect.

What microneedling is

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy, or CIT) uses a device fitted with very fine needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin’s surface. These channels are tiny and controlled — not wounds in any conventional sense. But the skin treats them as minor injuries and responds by activating its natural repair process: producing new collagen and elastin at the treated sites. This controlled repair response is what makes microneedling effective — it triggers the skin to rebuild and remodel over time.

What microneedling can help with

  • Acne scars — Rolling and boxcar scars respond particularly well to collagen induction. Ice pick scars (deep, narrow) are harder to treat with any method.
  • Skin texture — Rough or uneven texture from sun damage, congestion, or early ageing responds over a course of sessions.
  • Fine lines — Particularly fine lines around the mouth, eyes, and forehead.
  • Enlarged pores — Improved skin elasticity reduces the appearance of enlarged pores.
  • Pigmentation (PIH) — Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can improve, particularly when combined with targeted home care.
  • General skin quality — Density, radiance, and overall tone for maintenance clients.

What the treatment involves

At myskiin, treatment begins with numbing cream applied to the area (20–30 minutes to take effect). The device is then passed across the skin in a controlled pattern, with needle depth adjusted for the area and concern. The treatment itself typically takes 30 minutes. Immediately after, the skin appears pink — similar to mild sunburn — settling within 24–48 hours.

How many sessions?

Three to six sessions is the standard course, spaced four to six weeks apart. Acne scarring may require more depending on depth and type. The collagen remodelling process continues between sessions — which is why spacing them out is essential.

RF Microneedling — what’s the difference?

RF (radiofrequency) microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered at depth through the needle tips — triggering stronger collagen remodelling, particularly suited to significant scarring or skin laxity. myskiin offers both; we advise on the right approach at your consultation.

Honest expectations: Results develop gradually over weeks to months — not immediately. The most significant changes from a course take time. We’ll give you realistic expectations at your free consultation.
