Laser Hair Removal on Dark Skin:
Is It Safe and Does It Work?

If you've been told laser won't work on your skin type, it's worth a second opinion. Here's the honest answer — and what to look for in a clinic.

If you've ever asked about laser hair removal and been told "it might not be suitable for your skin type" — or if you've simply assumed it's not an option — this article is for you.

The honest answer: laser hair removal can work safely and effectively on darker skin tones. But not with every machine, and not at every clinic. The technology matters, and so does the experience of the person using it.

Why skin tone matters in laser hair removal

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in hair follicles. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, heating the follicle and impairing its ability to produce hair in future.

The challenge with darker skin tones is that melanin is also present in the skin itself. Older laser systems — particularly intense pulsed light (IPL) devices — struggled to differentiate between the melanin in the hair and the melanin in the surrounding skin. This created a real risk of skin damage: burns, pigmentation changes, and scarring on darker skin tones.

This is why, for many years, people with darker skin were told that laser wasn't for them. And for some older technology, that was accurate advice.

But laser technology has moved on significantly. Modern systems designed for the full skin tone spectrum — using longer wavelengths, gradual heating, and advanced cooling — have fundamentally changed what's possible for darker skin clients.

Not all laser machines are the same

Modern systems — particularly those using longer wavelengths and advanced cooling — are designed to treat a far wider range of skin tones safely.

The key difference is in how the laser energy is delivered. Newer systems use gradual energy delivery that heats the follicle slowly and evenly, rather than delivering a high-intensity pulse that can damage the surrounding skin. Combined with integrated cooling, this approach allows treatment on skin tones that older systems couldn't safely handle.

When you're looking at a laser clinic — particularly as a person with a darker skin tone — the most important question you can ask is: "What machine do you use, and is it appropriate for my skin tone?"

The Soprano system at myskiin

At myskiin, we use the Soprano laser system — a professional-grade platform built by Alma Lasers. The Soprano system is clinically designed to work across a wide range of skin tones, including darker and melanin-rich skin.

The system uses a combination of wavelengths and a gradual heating method that specifically addresses the challenges of treating higher-melanin skin safely. It's one of the reasons we chose it — because a significant proportion of the West Midlands community has skin tones that older systems would have excluded.

We also carry out a full skin assessment and patch test before any treatment begins. This is non-negotiable. The patch test lets us assess how your skin responds to the laser energy on a small area before committing to a full session.

What to realistically expect

For clients with darker skin tones, results are broadly comparable to those for clients with lighter skin tones when the right technology is used. Most clients see a progressive reduction in hair growth across a course of sessions.

Energy settings

Depending on your skin tone and hair colour, the energy settings may start more conservatively and build. This is the right approach — not a limitation.

Contrast matters

Laser works best with contrast between hair and skin. Very dark hair on darker skin is treatable — but very light or white hair on any skin tone cannot be targeted by laser.

Sun exposure

If your skin is recently tanned or exposed to significant sun, treatment may need to be delayed. This applies to all skin tones, not just darker skin.

Individual results

Results depend on hair type, growth cycles, and treatment area. We'll give you a clear picture at your consultation.

What the West Midlands deserves

The West Midlands is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the UK. A large portion of the local population has South Asian, Black, or mixed-heritage backgrounds — and has historically been underserved by beauty and aesthetics clinics that either couldn't treat darker skin safely or didn't think to.

That's changing. And it should change faster.

At myskiin, you shouldn't have to search far to find a clinic equipped to treat your skin safely. We're here, in Walsall, open every day — and we're set up to treat you.
